Marine: Methanol
New regulations are making the shift to green fuels unavoidable. The IMO’s net-zero target and the EU’s FuelEU Maritime rules and ETS mean every voyage into European waters now carries a rising carbon cost, up to €100,000 per Asia–Europe roundtrip.
In response, shipowners are moving fast: over 200 methanol-capable vessels are on order. Methanol has emerged as the leading commercially mature green fuel, with dual-fuel engines from MAN breaking the old chicken-and-egg stalemate. The race is on to scale reliable green methanol supply and bunkering to match this demand.

At ocane, we believe green methanol is the most practical near-term pathway to decarbonise shipping - but the industry faces a chicken-and-egg dilemma: vessels are being ordered faster than fuel supply can scale, and fuel projects can’t be financed without clear offtake commitments.
We are calling on leading shipowners, ports, and engine makers to join us on a journey from today’s technology readiness to our first-of-a-kind (FOAK) methanol plant. By working together under an early Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), we can align regulatory approvals, co-design offtake triggers, and unlock the investment needed to deliver reliable, scalable green methanol supply where your fleets need it most. Let’s break the cycle and put methanol into ships’ bunkers faster.
Help us to help you save the planet.
